Lakay Restaurant, located at 470 Valley Rd, West Orange, NJ 07052, has quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most inviting and vibrant dining spots in the area. This hidden gem specializes in a delightful mix of Caribbean and American flavors, offering a diverse menu that caters to both adventurous eaters and those looking for a comforting meal. Whether you're in the mood for savory stews, freshly grilled meats, or tropical-inspired sides, there's always something to satisfy your taste at Lakay.

The ambiance at Lakay Restaurant immediately draws you in with its warm, welcoming atmosphere. The interior features colorful decor, blending traditional Caribbean elements with modern touches, creating a space that’s both cozy and lively. The friendly staff adds to the inviting vibe, making you feel like a guest in someone’s home rather than just a customer at a restaurant.

One of the standout features of Lakay is its varied menu, which reflects the rich culinary heritage of the Caribbean. You can begin your meal with an appetizer like the jerk chicken wings, perfectly spiced with a smoky heat that will leave you wanting more. If you're after something lighter, the fresh salads and plantain dishes are a great choice, providing a nice balance of flavors and textures. For the main course, you can’t go wrong with the oxtail stew, slow-cooked to tender perfection, or the curry goat, which is rich and flavorful. The restaurant also offers a variety of seafood options like the grilled tilapia, which is both light and satisfying, making it perfect for those looking for a healthier alternative.

Vegetarians will also find plenty to love here, from the hearty vegetable rice to the savory bean stews. And don’t forget about the sides-whether it’s the golden fried plantains, macaroni pie, or savory rice and peas, every dish complements the main course perfectly, rounding out your meal.

If you’re looking for something different to try, the daily specials are always worth checking out. These dishes often feature seasonal ingredients or take a unique twist on traditional Caribbean recipes. For instance, during the summer months, you might find grilled fish tacos topped with a zesty mango salsa, a refreshing and unexpected treat that showcases the restaurant’s creativity.

The drink menu at Lakay Restaurant is equally impressive, with a wide selection of refreshing beverages to pair with your meal. From tropical fruit juices like guava and pineapple to traditional Caribbean cocktails like rum punch, there’s something to suit every palate. The rum punch, in particular, has a perfect balance of sweetness and strength, making it a favorite among regulars.

In terms of service, Lakay Restaurant shines. The staff is always attentive, offering helpful recommendations and ensuring that every guest feels taken care of. Whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch with friends or celebrating a special occasion, the service here is consistently friendly and efficient.

  • I drove from Boston to New Jersey for the Memorial weekend, i intended to vigorously eat my country made cuisine and Lakay Restaurant met all expectations. The ingredients was purely implemented with love and the right dosage. The griot was well fried, the djondjon rice had the authentic taste. The manager accommodated my patience with a Haitian mac and cheese(Delicious). The only recommendation is that the menu is not displayed whether digitally or physically but if you know your Haitian Meal that is the place to be.

  • First time visiting. Ok welcoming . Person who took order didn’t speak an English well and I asked her if there is Black rice she said no but I saw $4 extra for Black rice. Plus she charged wrong gave me less change . It’s annoying to start but I ordered Griyo (fried pork ) and rice with bean. It’s takes 15 minutes to be ready but foods was delicious. Salad was fresh. Especially rice was just right! I will give a try again. I recommend who wants authentic Haitian food.

  • I placed my order at the restaurant. It takes time to make the food so ordering ahead for pickup is a smarter move. After I placed my order, it took over 45 minutes for 2 dishes, griyo and chicken to be completed. There was one order ahead of mine. I waited inside and eventually went outside to get some air. There were no spaces in front of the restaurant when I arrived. I parked a few blocks away. The food was packaged well. The price is a little high for the amount of meat in a large order. The beans and rice taste similar to the Jamaican style of beans and rice. I expected it to be different since this is a Haitian restaurant. I was able to get about 4 plates of food from the 2 large dishes. Not shown in the picture is the Haitian macaroni and cheese. The griyo was spot on and the chicken was very good. Soup joumou is every other Saturday. Best to call ahead. There was no more black rice when I ordered early evening at 5pm. It is rice cooked in water that is soaked with black mushrooms. Black rice, soup joumou and griyo are a must try for those who are new to Haitian food.

  • The food and service here was amazing!!! I took my little sister out here and she was so happy! We got the large turkey and chicken dishes (I forget their names) but the amount and quality of food we were served for what we paid for was EXCELLENT! Tons of people were also coming in/out to pick up orders. I highly recommend visiting Lakay!
